Debbie Chuckas has been the manager at the Kukui Grove Macy’s for four years, and during the past three her store has brought the coveted Macy’s ‘apple’ to the dining room.
“This year the color is merlot, kind of like the wine,” Chuckas said, pointing out the trophy that the department store won for besting all other locations in its Bag It! food drive under the chain’s You Can Do It! initiative.
In addition to the apple, the dining table in the employee lounge was filled with box lunches, a celebration for earning the apple for the third consecutive year.
Kelvin Moniz and Analea Flores of the Kaua‘i Food Bank were guests at the lunch, during which Chuckas presented a check of $2,000 to the food bank.
“The first year I was the manager we finished second place, and I said, ‘This wasn’t good enough,’” Chuckas said.
The next year, the Kukui Grove Macy’s earned its first apple — a gold one — and followed that feat the next year with a green apple.
The apple represents the best in the company, Chuckas said, and we’re already gearing up for next year.
