The girl skateboarders are dropping in.
According to a survey conducted by the National Sporting Goods Association, of the 38 sports and activities surveyed, the female share of skateboarding showed the strongest increase.
In a press release from Surfersvillage, females represented 26.6 percent, or 2.7 million, of total skateboard participation in 2007.
This is an increase from 19.5 percent, or 1.9 million, shown in a 2002 survey by the NSGA.
Females also increased market share by more than 4 percent in two other sports and activities.
In dart throwing, women increased their share to 41.2 percent in 2007 from the 37.1 percent surveyed in 2002.
Tackle football saw women increase its participation to 13.8 percent in 2007 from 9.7 percent in 2002.
Women also dropped in participation in paintball games where they lost the greatest share of female participation. In 2002, less than 21 percent of paintball participants were female.
That figure dropped to 10 percent in 2007.
Other areas where female participation decreased include mountain biking and target archery, both losing more than 4 percent.
According to the survey, despite efforts to increase female participation in specific sports over the past five years, 23 of the 38 sports surveyed remained “neutral” with a 2 percent change in participation.
