That score, a 6-yard run by Caleb Sarsona followed by a 2-point run-in for the point after kept the Warriors from a shutout in a 44-10 loss to Kaua‘i High School.
Kaua‘i High School did most of its damage in the first half, racking up a pair of field goals and a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter for a 23-0 lead.
The defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champions continued to build on that frame by adding another pair of TDs in the second period for a 37-0 halftime lead, scoring in all but two of its first-half possessions and limiting Kapa‘a to no offensive first downs.
Trent Allianic opened the books with two straight field goals, the first a 39-yarder with 8:09 showing followed by another at the 4:35 mark.
Teila Huni set the stage for the Raiders’ first TD on a Kapa‘a interception and Trey Shimabukuro found Canaan Bernard in the end zone on an 12-yard hit at the 3:08 mark.
With 1:45 left in the first quarter, Sheldon Sakai pulled in an 11-yard aerial from Shimabukuro with Allianic’s point-after boots accounting for the 23-0 lead.
Shimabukuro hit Dayne Murata with a 32-yard aerial at the 7:41 mark for Kaua‘i’s first second quarter score.
Paleku Yasay, announced as the player of the game, followed with a 74-yard scamper to paydirt on a second-and-two situation with 4:05 left in the half.
But the Raider smoothness began to wear as Kaua‘i was hit with two costly penalties, a personal foul and a pass interference penalty.
This helped Kapa‘a, but the Warriors’ attempt at scoring went wide on a Ikaika Fuerte field goal attempt at the Kaua‘i 40-yard line.
Zachary Suniga set up the final Raider score in the third period when he blocked a Kapa‘a punt which was fielded by Chris Longboy on the Kapa‘a 23-yard line. Shimabukuro, on the next play, hit Scott Taylor for the score with 1:34 left in the quarter.
Kapa‘a finally broke into the books at the 5:44 mark with a safety, and added their touchdown as the seconds counted down.
The Kaua‘i junior varsity managed a 9-0 win over Kapa‘a.
