NAWILIWILI — “Lelele,” a Wells 30, picked up its second straight win at the Nawiliwili Yacht Club’s Gene Wells Memorial Series, Race No. 2, Thursday.
Despite light air prevailing over the Nawiliwili Harbor, there was enough wind to keep the boats in a tight pack as races developed for the first three places and for fourth through sixth place.
Lelele took command of the field from the onset and stayed just ahead of challenges exerted from “Fast Company” during the nearshore segment of the course.
The “Lelele” crew finished on a 43:58 elapsed (43:50 PHRF) for the top spot, followed by “OZone” (44:53 elapsed, 44:57 PHRF), “Fast Company” (45:33 elapsed, 45:37 PHRF) for the leaders.
Fourth place went to “Malihini,” re-entering the field on a 49:45 elapsed sail (51:00 PHRF). “Speedy” (53:37 elapsed, 53:42 PHRF), “Coyote” (57:41 elapsed, 54:02 PHRF), “Bonjolea” (57:10 elapsed, 48:23 PHRF), and “Papa‘au” (58:08 elapsed, 51:20 PHRF) rounded out the main field.
“Tiare,” a 22-foot Wells, finished ninth on a 1:05:50 elapsed time.
Ned Whitlock and Spencer McDonald took “Marta,” a dinghy out for a special run for the second straight week, the little craft running its own course on a 43:54 elapsed time.
The Gene Wells Memorial Series reaches its midpoint Thursday with Race No. 3, and the public is invited to view the competition from the jetty wall vantage point.
