KAPA‘A — It started out as a wish to help improve the school campus, said Alexa Thompson, a Kapa‘a Middle School eighth-grader.
Yesterday, a truck rolled up to the campus and members of the Marine Corps League lifted the gate of the truck to reveal seven wooden benches painted in the colors of the league.
That represented part of the legacy of Thompson and Sierra DeForge’s dream of improving the school campus.
“This is just part of what is coming,” said Norberto Garcia of the Marine Corps League. “We are working on completing a dozen more benches and eight picnic tables which will be delivered as soon as it’s done.”
Thompson, who was named as one of the outstanding student athletes at the recent Kaua‘i Pop Warner Association Jamboree 2008, said she and DeForge were thinking of running for student council offices at the school and were thinking of ways to improve the campus.
This quest found its way to paper when, during a grades course, Thompson and DeForge crafted an essay talking about the school’s needs for a better campus.
Garcia said the Marine Corps League heard about the students’ request and the league decided to help out.
Mary Lardizabal, Kapa‘a Middle School chorus director and recently named Teacher of the Year, lost little time in getting her chorus students dispatched to deliver the benches to different parts of the campus.
The Marine Corps League recently completed an island-wide delivery of school backpacks to Kaua‘i’s schools. Additionally, promotion for the annual Toys for Tots campaign kicked off during the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau Fair where the Marine Corps League maintained an informational booth.
