Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s half sister, O‘ahu teacher Maya Soetoro-Ng, is scheduled to speak at a rally in support of his candidacy at 2 p.m. today at the War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e.
According to a statement from campaign officials, Soetoro-Ng will share a personal look at what makes her brother so passionate about this country and so committed to bringing about change.
Brian Schatz, chairman of the Hawai‘i State Democratic Party, and Andy Winer, chairman of the Hawai‘i State Obama campaign, will be accompanying Soetoro-Ng to Kaua‘i, the release said.
State Sen. Gary Hooser, honorary chairman of Kaua‘i for Obama, will introduce Soetoro-Ng.
Ron Toki will welcome guests with guitar music, after which Sabra Kauka will perform the opening oli and then be joined by Nawahine O Kamaile for hula kahiko. The master of ceremonies is Ron Wiley of KQNG radio.
Willie K. will make a special guest appearance.
The rally, sponsored by Kaua‘i for Obama and the Kaua‘i Democratic Party, will also allow the public an opportunity to meet and speak with some of the County Council and mayoral candidates, who will be available to meet attendees at tables set up in the lobby area starting at 1:30 p.m. The event will begin at 2 p.m.
Complimentary tickets will be available at the door, with a suggested donation of $20. They are also available at Bali Hai Photo and Kayak Kaua‘i in Hanalei and Java Kai in Kapa‘a.
