Kaua‘i High School graduate and current Pepperdine sophomore Chelsea Smith-Wishard was once again the top runner for the Waves at yesterday’s cross country invitational at Alumni Park.
Smith-Wishard completed the 6K course in seventh place with a time of 21:29.22, behind runners from USC, Drake and Fresno State. Her fellow teammate Lauren Lodge finished right behind her with a time of 21:42.32.
Overall, Pepperdine (54) finished second behind USC (22), placing nine runners within the top 30 in the invitational field of 2,000 student-athletes from the collegiate and high school levels.
This was Smith-Wishard’s fifth time as Pepperdine’s leading runner. At the Stanford Invitational, Smith-Wishard finished 25th. Smith-Wishard returned to Hawai‘i in late September for the Big Wave Invitational hosted by the University of Hawai‘i and led the Waves with a third-place finish.
Smith-Wishard was a two-time individual state champion at Kaua‘i and has won several track titles in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation. Smith-Wishard is in her second year on scholarship at Pepperdine.
Next up for the Smith-Wishard and the Waves is the Kampmann Klassic at Alumni Park.
