Waimea 3, Kaua‘i 1 – WAIMEA — Brandee Victorino hid a personal 14 kills and eight blocks — four solo, four double— and served up the match-winning ace in Waimea High School’s four set win over previously undefeated Kaua‘i High School last night, 25-20, 32-30, 17-25 and 25-18.
Waimea (2-0 Round 2, 5-3 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation) was a tough competitor against Kaua‘i (1-1, 7-1) in the first round, nearly handing the Raiders their first loss then and head coach Chad Delanoza said the girls knew it could be done.
“It feels really good. They came out and played to their potential. I think they realized they were so close in Round 1 and they knew they had to find success,” he said. “A sense of belief is nice to have on their side though.”
Delanoza also attributed their success to their strong sense of determination. Delanoza said the players have a mindset of where they want to be and have given themselves a time frame in which to achieve it.
“They decided where they want to be and they know they have to work. They’ll find ways to win,” he said.
Behind Victorino, was Jayme Jacinto who also hit a personal best 13 kills. Chaelyn Briones posted 14 assists.
But Kaua‘i wasn’t without its offense. Senior setter Mikaila Naholoholo had an impressive night with 19 assists, three kills and seven aces — five of them coming in the third set.
Coach Corey Morishita shrugged when asked about the break down of the team.
“We just made a lot of unforced errors,” he said.
Kaua‘i’s Jori Jasper finished with 13 kills; Malia Kagawa finished with seven.
