Waimea High School cross country teams swept the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation cross country, Race No. 4, Saturday at Kaua‘i Community College.
The Menehune took the girls race with 19 points followed by Kapa‘a High School at 42 points and Kaua‘i High School in third place with 61 points.
It also took the boys race despite Kapa‘a’s Alex Lamadrid nailing the top overall slot. Waimea posted 28 points followed by Kaua‘i High School with 41 points. Kapa‘a chalked up 72 points for third place with Island School rounding out the board at 96 points.
Lamadrid returned to the course for Kapa‘a to set the pace for the boys field, stopping the clock at 19:09.50.
From there, two sprint finishes for No. 2-3 and No. 4-5 kept spectators at the tape as Waimea’s Christian Tangalin (19:18.70) bested Kaua‘i’s Daniel DeGracia (19:20.60) by mere steps while the battle for 4-5 was waged between blueshirts Darrel Nonaka (19:24.10) and Peter Joyce (19:26.40).
Caralyn Broyles continued to set the pace for the girls with a commanding 21:44.30 run followed by Natasha Abadilla at 23:19.30.
Excitement came in the battle for No. 16-17 between a pair of Redshirts as preliminary results had Alexis Aguano and Ashley Rayray finishing with a 28:10.50 tie.
The final two places also came down to a sprint finish as Kaua‘i’s Kieran Caberto (41:27.00) was just .20 second faster than Paige Anguay (41:27:20).
The KIF cross country championships takes place Oct. 18 starting at 9 a.m. at the Island School complex.
