A total of $572,000 in construction funds will go toward the installation of vehicle traffic counting and classification systems on the islands of Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i, Lana‘i, Maui and O‘ahu.
The systems will be used by the Department of Transportation’s Highways Division to collect traffic data that will assist in the planning and design of highway projects statewide.
“We are focused on using every tool available to reduce congestion on our highways,” Gov. Linda Lingle said. “The data provided by these systems will provide the Department of Transportation with valuable insights into driver habits that it can take into account when planning future highway projects.”
The total project cost is estimated to be $3.71 million, which includes a previous allotment of $350,000 for design and federal funds totaling $2.788 million.
Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2009 and be completed in August 2010.
