Shannin Correa had a hat trick and a Thunder penalty kick made the difference in two of the three American Youth Soccer Organization, Region 940, Girls Under 12 playoffs Tuesday afternoon, the opening round.
Correa picked up two of her three goals in the first half and finished with a second-half goal as Real Waimea broke a 2-2 halftime deadlock with four goals to advance with a 6-2 win over the Lihu‘e Thunder in the first of two games played at the North Vidinha soccer fields.
Kaua‘i Gurlz’s Tailee Tangonan came up with a power shot off the left wing. The ball was thumped away by the Thunder keeper, but dribbled past the keeper to cross the plane.
That effort fell short as a penalty kick by Thunder’s Whitney Summerhaze was the edge in Koloa’s 2-1 win over the Lihu‘e Kaua‘i Gurlz in the second of three playoff games.
Pili Chung had two goals and Kaylee Balbarino netted a score as the Kaua‘i Strikers, coached by Concetta Ijima, kept its record unblemished by blanking the Waimea team coached by Paul Applegate, 3-0.
Alli Pascual struck early for the Shooting Stars, netting her goal off a nice cross just two touches into the game.
But Real Waimea came back with a pair of Correa goals and a breakaway goal from Tianee Esaki deadlocked the contest at the half.
Waimea roared back in the second half on goals by Correa, Rachel Semblante, Bailey Kaneakalau and a long, near-midfield bomb from Bailey Nordmeier sealing the deal.
“The Thunder have come a long way since our first meeting,” said Ethan Rohner, one of the Waimea Real coaches, following the win. “Our first meeting was 9-1 in our favor, but they went back and made some adjustments which worked. It was 2-2 at the half.”
Lauren Hicks provided the difference for the Thunder in the first half despite a strong defensive showing from both teams.
With the wins, Real Waimea will meet the Koloa Thunder this afternoon starting at 4:30 p.m. at the North Vidinha fields.
The Kaua‘i Stingers will meet Kalaheo-Garma at Kalawai field in the second round of the AYSO, Region 940, U12G playoffs.
Kaua‘i Gurlz and the Lihu‘e Shooting Stars will square off at the Waimea park.
The AYSO, Region 940, U12G playoffs will continue with a champion being determined on Oct. 27 starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Hanapepe Stadium.
Playoffs for the Under 12 Boys start Saturday with two games at Kalawai Park starting at 9:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. with a championship game scheduled for Oct. 28 at Hanapepe Stadium.
