Kaua‘i Chamber opposes charter amendment
The Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce announced its opposition to a proposed charter amendment in the general election relating to the implementation of the General Plan, specifically in reference to transient accommodation units.
The Kaua‘i chamber said that in the current economic situation, the island can’t afford to limit growth and development of the “lifeline of our economy.”
“The Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors and Government Affairs Committee urges all voters to vote no on this particular amendment as it is carefully disguised as a growth control measure,” states a chamber press release.
HTA seeks new marketing in Western Europe
The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, the state agency for tourism, will terminate its marketing management service contract with Aviareps Mangum effective Dec. 31. Aviareps Mangum has managed Hawai‘i Tourism Europe’s marketing efforts on behalf of HTA since 2004.
The agency will solicit proposals from interested contractors to provide tourism related general sales agent services and represent Hawai‘i in Western Europe.
“The HTA appreciates the work performed by Aviareps Mangum over the past four years and we extend our best wishes for the agency’s future endeavors,” David Uchiyama, HTA’s vice president of tourism marketing, said.

Mokulele Airlines to add interisland jet service
Beginning Nov. 19, Mokulele Airlines will offer jet service between Honolulu, Kona and Lihu‘e through an agreement with Indianapolis-based Republic Airways.
The airline service agreement provides for Republic Airways’ subsidiary, Shuttle America, to operate up to four Embraer 170 jets configured with six first-class and 64 coach seats.
“This is very good news for the economy while providing the people of Hawai‘i an additional choice in interisland service,” Gov. Linda Lingle said. “This agreement also means new job opportunities, and that is very welcome news for our residents.”
Mokulele Airlines is a locally owned and operated interisland commuter airline based in Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i. For more information, visit www.mokuleleairlines.com
2009 Clean Energy Summit set for Hawai‘i
Hawai‘i’s Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism will host the seventh annual Korea-Pacific U.S. States Joint Conference in Honolulu at the Sheraton Waikiki, Aug. 31 to Sept. 2, 2009.
The state will use the opportunity to launch the inaugural Asia-Pacific Clean Energy Summit and Expo to provide nations throughout the region an opportunity to share renewable energy policies, best practices, new technologies and innovations.
“By focusing the topic of the conference on clean energy, the event is expected to draw upwards of 1,000 government, business and research participants,” DBEDT Director Theodore E. Liu said. “As the worldwide importance of the Asia-Pacific region grows, the need for economic cooperation between Korea and the U.S. Pacific states increases.”
Government policymakers, industry professionals, suppliers and customers, and consultants are the targeted audience for the summit.

Hanapepe consumer co-op in works
Mana ‘Ohana LLC is a new consumer cooperative that will be located at the Green Garden building in Hanapepe.
Mana ‘Ohana LLC was started by Evan Meek and Lauren Shaw Meek almost three years ago as an idea for a health food store in Hanapepe, and has grown into a model project for food sustainability on Kauai. The cooperative will utilize an 8,000-square-foot building with a 3,000-square-foot kitchen for local people that wish to start their own businesses utilizing materials and food found on the island.
Mana ‘Ohana aims to tackle dependence on food importation by providing a space that can take any local from product concept to shelf with little personal investment.
Mana ‘Ohana’s main operations will include commercial kitchen space, independent business rental space, a full-service grocery with a local foods store and full service deli, a six-day-a-week farmer’s and crafter’s market, and a community garden.
