The Kaua‘i High School girls earned the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation bowling title, but the Red Raider boys need one more win to earn the title outright.
Aimee Palaroan rolled the hot ball for the Kaua‘i girls, finishing with a 170, 146 and 164 as the Kaua‘i girls took first place in two of its three games, holding off a strong challenge from Waimea 757-720 in Game 1 led by Tiffany Lum’s 157.
Sherri Cubangbang took the lead for Kaua‘i in Game 2, rolling a 147, a pin better than Palaroan’s 146 as Kaua‘i locked up its second first place, 695-656 against another strong Waimea challenge led by Lum’s 149 and Bronte Acosta’s 144.
That strong Menehune challenge finally paid off in Game 3 when Waimea, behind Lum’s 166 and Acosta’s 163, edged Kaua‘i, 769-714.
Despite that third game slip, Kaua‘i claimed the KIF girls bowling title, needing just a tie in the two matches before the matches started, Saturday.
A Waimea win in both remaining matches would have forced a roll-off between Kaua‘i and Waimea.
Kapa‘a, rolling behind Mindi Agena’s high pointing (135-124-158) and strong showing from Joanna Chang (127-153-139) was a consistent third place finisher in three games.
Angela Choy (96-76-112) and Kaulana Haneberg (86-1110115) represented Island School girls.
The Kaua‘i High School boys team faces a must-win Saturday to claim the boys KIF title outright.
Similar to the Red Raider girls, the Kaua‘i boys rolled a second and two first places to claim the Saturday series.
Harold Shimono Jr. rolled his season-best 220 in Game 1 to lead Waimea to a 816-765 win over the Raider boys while Kaua‘i got a 192 from Kelii Gonnsalves.
Brad Russell took the forefront for Kaua‘i in Game 2, rolling a 184 to lead the Red Raider team to just a two-pin advantage over a strong Kapa‘a challenge led by Aaron Belmonte’s 214. Kaua‘i won that line 784-782 while Waimea finished at 725 and Island School netted 541.
William Balbin, Russell and Gonnsalves stepped up to the line for rolls of 179, 178 and 174, respectively in Game 3 as the Kaua‘i boys asserted itself 809-691 against Waimea, Nelson Acosta and Shimono leading that effort with 155 and 154 games, respectively.
Kapa‘a, rolling behind a 176 from Nelson Acosta and a 140 from Florendo Melchor, finished third at 536. Island School got a 103 game from Daniel Miller to end at 504.
Saturday marks the final game for the KIF bowling season with Kaua‘i boys needing a win to clinch its division title.
First ball rolls at 2 p.m.
Following the regular season, the KIF will host the Billy Tees Boys and Girls Hawai‘i Bowling Championships on Oct. 30 to 31 at the Lihu‘e Bowling Center.
