SAN JUAN, Lanzarote — Five Hawai‘i surfers were victorious yesterday, winning their opening heats in the Sant Surf Pro.
Of the 16 heats run, Flynn Novak, Casey Brown, Mason Ho, Ola Eleogram and Kaua‘i’s Evan Valiere came out on top. Sunset Beach’s Ezra Sitt and Kaua‘i’s Gavine Gillette and Jesse Merle-Jones finished second in their heats. The trio still advance to the next round.
The Association of Surfing Professional’s 6-Star event got underway in tricky 2-to 3-foot waves at the famous lefthander at San Juan. There are eight more heats scheduled to run today — three of them including Hawai‘i surfers Cheyne Willis, Tonino Benson and Love Hodel.
Kaua‘i’s Dylan Melamed narrowlly missed the cut, surfing against Merle-Jones and Che Stang of California who finished in first.
This event, second of a three-event series, will conclude in Portugal in two weeks.
