The suspect arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder in connection with a shooting Sunday in Kapahi has been identified by county officials as Payton Allen Rapozo, 22, of Wailua.
Police have not yet released the name of the 43-year-old victim because next of kin has not yet been notified, but county spokeswoman Mary Daubert confirmed the victim was the boyfriend of Rapozo’s mother and said that the Kawaihau Road residence at which the incident took place was the victim’s home.
Rapozo was still in custody at Police Cellblock undergoing further questioning, but had not yet been formally charged with a crime and was being held without bail at press time.
The weapon used in the attack was a .22-caliber revolver pistol of undetermined ownership, Daubert said. Following the shooting, relatives of Rapozo already at the scene subdued him. There were no other injuries.
An autopsy is pending to determine the official cause of death, she said.
Rapozo’s criminal history includes convictions for first-degree attempted assault and first-degree terroristic threatening in connection with a January 2007 incident in which he reportedly doused a police officer with gasoline and threatened to set him on fire.
In that case, he reportedly walked toward Chris Gandeza, who was responding to a domestic abuse call, with two knives, a cup of gasoline and a butane lighter.
Rapozo was initially charged with attempted murder, but eventually pleaded guilty to lesser charges.
Public Defender Ken Norelli said at the time that even the reduced crimes could have yielded a prison term as long as 15 years, but 5th Circuit Judge Kathleen Watanabe sentenced Rapozo to just a year in prison, with credit for time served while awaiting trial, as well as five years probation.
