Waimea’s Jayna Shaffer rolled her season best in Game 2, Tiffany Lum had her second best season game in Game 3, and the Menehune got help from Kapa‘a to edge past the Kaua‘i High School girls team.
“We always knew we were in it, but everything came together Saturday, and we got the win by a point over Kaua‘i,” said Paulette Lum, Tiffany’s mom, who is a regular at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation bowling matches.
The swing for Waimea came in Game 3 when Mindi Agena rolled her second best season score 182 to lead Kapa‘a to a second place finish over Kaua‘i, Waimea getting first place led by Lum’s 186.
Kapa‘a finished second with a 668 total, a pin short of Waimea’s 669 and Kaua‘i settled in third at 643, led by Kelsey Cadiente’s 141.
That gave Waimea two first places and a second while Kaua‘i girls, opening with a 791 first game behind Jessica Iwata’s 168, finished with one first, a second and third place finish.
According to Kaua‘i High School athletic director Ross Shimabukuro, Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation team scoring format has a team earning 4 points for a first place, 3 points for a second, 2 points for third and a point for fourth.
Waimea finished Game 1 at 721 behind Tiffany’s 143. In Game 2, Shaffer paced the field with a 172 to lead Waimea to a first finish setting the stage for Game 3 where Tiffany paced the field with a 186 to lead the Menehune to its second first finish.
Kapa‘a girls finished with two third place finishes and a second with Agena setting the Warrior pace with games of 159, 157 and 182, her season-best score of 195 coming last week when she led Kapa‘a to a second finish behind Waimea in Game 2.
With nine games completed in the season, Tiffany takes the lead with a 1,475 pinfall and a 163.89 average challenged by Agena with a 1,462 pinfall and 162.44 average.
Boys
Kaua‘i High School boys finished with two first finishes and a second to take the Saturday matches.
Kelii Gonnsalves set the pace in the first two games, rolling a 172 to lead Kaua‘i to a 799 first and followed that with a 204 in Game 2 for a 788 Kaua‘i first finish.
But Gonsalves dropped in Game 3, relinquishing the lead to Russell Cubangbang who finished with a 171 to Gonnsalves’ 162, and the Raiders dropped to second 733 to Waimea’s 767 led by Harold Shimono Jr.’s 188.
Waimea’s Matthew Haack continues to lead the boys’ averages with nine games rolled for a 1,593 pinfall and a 177 average.
Gonnsalves and William Balbin of Kaua‘i follow in the second and third places with averages of 171.11 (1,540) and 168.56 (1,517), respectively.
