Kaua‘i 41, Waimea 14 – HANAPEPE — Kaua‘i High School scored three touchdowns in three minutes at the tail-end of the first half and with Trey Shimabukuro at the helm, the undefeated Red Raiders went on to defeat the Waimea Menehune 41-14 last night at Hanapepe Stadium.
Shimabukuro was 14-for-28 with 268 yards passings, four touchdowns and an interception.
Kaua‘i (3-0) was the first to score with a 45-yard field goal by Trent Allianic early in the first. But Waimea (2-2) was jumpstarted by Dylan Ishihara who recovered a fumble by Paleku Yasay at the Menehune 39-yard line. That led to the drive resulting in a touchdown by Isaa Horner. The extra point by Cody Owen put them up 7-3.
Shimabukuro, up until that point, hadn’t thrown an interception all season, but Ishihara was in the mix once again to make a play and a Kaua‘i turnover. That would be his only one of the game as Kaua‘i tookover in the second quarter.
Allianic nailed another field goal — this one a 34 yarder — to get within one of the Menehune.
Cameron Largusa picked off Jenzen Cacal for his first of five interceptions of the night and returned to the Waimea 43-yard line. Yasay came up with two big runs, for two consectutive first downs to get to the 2-yard line. Shimabukuro handed off to Yasay again for the sneak, but instead of a touchdown, Kaua‘i fumbled and Waimea recovered in the endzone for a turnover and touchback.
Waimea was unable to capitalize and on the Owen punt, Dayne Murata came up with a return putting the Raiders in great field position. The play directly following resulted in 27-yard touchdown pass to Canaan Bernard.
On the short kickoff, Kaua‘i recovered and Bernard would go on to score another TD for 20 yards within the same minute. Sheldon Sakai scored with less than a minute of the first half to give Kaua‘i a cushion of a lead at 27-7.
Cacal, trying to make a play in the final seconds, was intercepted again, this time by Keala Lovell.
Waimea had possession for the majority of the second half. Rapacon led the rush again and was able to come up with a 5-yard TD.
Shimabukuro would counter that connecting with Sakai again with a 63-yard touchdown.
Waimea briefly tried a change with Kaulana Waalani-Arroyo. On his first snap, Waalani-Arroyo went with the keep and got the first down. Once they moved up in position, Cacal made the return the field and was picked off by Chad Koga who ran back for a 23-yard touchdown and the final score of the night.
