PUHI — Kawaikini School was visited by members of the Malie Scholarship Committee with a grant that will be used to offset expenses for a production being worked on by the Kawaikini student body.
That program is scheduled to take the stage toward the end of the school year and represents the work being accomplished by the students.
The Malie Scholarship was just one of the exciting events of the day for Kawaikini staff as they discussed not only the financial aid for their production, but also the upcoming opening of a new recording and video studio that has been constructed at Ke Kula Ni‘ihau O Kekaha.
Formal blessing of that facility is scheduled for Dec. 5 with the first transmission of a Hawaiian language radio show from that studio airing on Dec. 7.
Jill Kouchi, one of the Malie Scholarship Committee members, said, “Malie Foundation provides funding to individuals as well as groups to support the perpetuation of Hawaiian language or Hawaiian culture.”
The event being planned by Kawaikini will include Punana Leo, the school’s immediate neighbor, as well as the Kaua‘i Community College and will be open to the public.
“Hopefully, the funds will help them to defray some of the costs of putting this event together,” Kouchi said.
Kouchi said she hopes the other groups and individuals working with the perpetuation of Hawaiian language or the Hawaiian culture will be encouraged to apply for Malie Foundation funds.
