Jake Yount shot a course-record 63 yesterday and helped his teammates from San Diego take control with a 9-shot lead in the inaugural Kaua‘i Collegiate Invitational at the Pukea Golf Course.
Despite that, Jay Myers of San Jose State University holds the individual lead with an 8-under 134.
Utah’s Chance Cota and Boise State’s Blake Brown are tied for third at 136.
San Diego, which includes last year’s Hawai‘i high school state golf champion Alex Ching of Honolulu, holds a score of 553 over Drake which currently sits in second at 562. Ching, yesterday, shot a second-round 69 for a two-day total 4-under 138.
Kaua‘i’s hometown hero T.J. Kua, out of host school University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, shot a 2-under 70 and is currently in a tie for 16th place at 3-under 141. Senior Robert Berton shot his second consecutive even-par 72 and is tied for 26th at 144.
Jarred Sawada, of Mililani also representing the Warriors, shot even par yesterday for a two-day 3-over 145. Hawai‘i’s Pono Calip improved from his first-round 82 and shot a 76 yesterday to sit at 158 heading into today’s final round.
The Kua-led Warriors are 583, 30 shots off the lead. UH improved seven strokes from Monday’s first round and three of its five participants shot even-par or better.
Hawai‘i’s invitational featured teams from the Western Athletic Conference, James Madison University, San Diego, UC Riverside, Weber State and Osaka Gakuin from Japan.
The 54-hole tournament concludes today.
