The Westside Falcons clinched the BU10 division with a 4-0 win over Pohaku, but for Davin Garma, it was just one of those days, Sunday.
Garma woke up to his 10th birthday, but it was windy and rainy. He took to the field with one red shoe and one black shoe because he forgot his shoes, mom Jane Garma said.
“He had a big spot on his shirt so had to borrow his brother’s shirt,” Jane said. “ To top everything, he ran out of gel for his hair. It’s gotta be one of his worst days, ever!”
But that was until he netted one of the four goals that lifted the Westside Falcons to its division championships in the Kaua‘i Soccer Association finals at the North Vidinha field.
“There it is!” Jane shouted from the sidelines. “Finally, you got a goal! That’s your birthday present. Happy birthday!”
Those comments saw a sheepish half smile break across the face of the 10-year-old grayshirt.
And if you thought that was enough to break the string of bad luck, Davin sat out the remainder of the game, icing down his ankle, rain droplets clinging to his spiked hair.
Joining Garma in netting goals for the BU10 title, Isaiah Duldulao, Kaleomana Meatoga and Donovan Miyasato chalked up goals to aid the Falcons’ win that came in weather conditions that ranged from rain and wind to periods of just blustery winds.
With three Westside Falcons teams on the field, two went home with divisional titles as the Falcons’ BU12-1 squad took a 4-3 win over the Falcons BU12-2 team in double overtime to cap a highly defensive slugfest that waged up and down the field.
During the first OT, the blueshirts celebrated after getting the downwind side of the field.
“No one scored against the wind,” said Dean Okayama, father of midfielder Jarred Okayama. “Every goal came with the help of the wind.”
But the defensive stalemate continued until the final goal in second OT.
The Kaua‘i Sparks clinched the GU10 division title with a 3-0 win over the Southside Lunachicks and the KSC-Blazing Angels, biding their time in the overtime game of the boys, shut down Hawaiian Heat 4-0 for the GU12 title.
Cory Nemeth fired off a hat trick and Taylor Foster added a goal in the first half en route to the GIFC taking a 9-2 win over Team Onipa‘a for the BU-14 division title.
“Cory just came back after missing several games due to an injury,” said Bill Lemke, the KIF soccer referee coordinator and father of one of the GIFC players. “You can see how he’s limping. I guess he’ll move to goalkeeper for the second half.”
The top seeded Ha‘aheo Kaua‘i clinched the GU14 title with an 8-0 win over Pohaku in the final game of the day.
