Punahou’s Robert Toma intercepted Dayton Kealoha and returned it for a 74-yard touchdown which proved to be the turning point in last night’s First Hawaiian Bank/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association semifinal matchup against Farrington. Punahou was down by a point but was able to come up with two consecutive touchdowns — the first, a 40-yarder by Dayton Hillard and the second, Toma’s interception, to seal the deal.
Despite a last-minute 97-yard kick return for a touchdown by Farrington, the No. 1 Buffanblu beat the Governors 35-27. This is the Buffanblu’s second appearance in the state tournament and second chance at the title. They now move on to play defending state champions of Leilehua for the title. An Interscholastic League of Honolulu team hasn’t won a title since 2004.
Leilehua 17, No. 2 Kahuku 10, OT
Unranked, but defending Division I state champions of Leilehua overcame a 10-2 deficit with two minutes remaining in regulation, to tie the game. Quarterback Andrew Manley found Rico Newman for a 14-yard touchdown, and then found an open Edieson Dumlao to make good on the two-point conversion to tie the game at 10 apiece and force second-ranked Kahuku to overtime.
The Mules got on the board by the second play. Manley’s was completed to Aberilla Rament for an 18-yard touchdown and Maika Kunioka’s extra point attempt was good. Kahuku was able to five plays off, but the game was over when Sage Kala’s pass intended for Jray Galeai was incomplete.
Leilehua will now play in its second consecutive state championship final.
No 1. ‘Iolani 24, Campbell 6
Top-ranked ‘Iolani of Division II will play in its second straight state championship title game after defeating Campbell 24-6 last night at the Ticky Vasconcelles Stadium.
This will be the Red Raiders’ (10-3) third appearance in a title game in four years. They will now play the Rams of Radford (11-3), at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at Aloha Stadium.
Radford 33, No. 2 Lahainaluna 27
The Radford Rams took down another ranked opponent last night at the War Memorial Stadium when they defeated second-ranked Lahainaluna 33-27. In the first round, the Rams took down third-ranked Kaua‘i High School to advance to last night’s game.
It will be Radford’s first appearance in the title game since losing to ‘Iolani in it in 2005.
