KAPA‘A — A late-game corner kick and a heavy workout for the Kapa‘a goalkeeper gave Seabury Hall a 3-2 edge yesterday at the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, Seabury’s Sabby Rogers fired off a corner kick that slipped under the Warriors’ keeper to break a 2-2 stalemate.
As the clock wound down, Seabury had several other scoring opportunities, but the Kapa‘a goalkeeper stood firm and No. 3 seeded Division II team from the last season’s state tournament settled for the 3-2 edge.
Rogers had an opportunity on a penalty kick late in the game, but Warrior goalkeeper, Shane Nishioka, one of several keepers that entered the goalmouth in the pre-season matchup, slapped the ball high over the net.
Kapa‘a, finishing second at last season’s state championships following a 1-0 loss to Mid Pacific in a shootout, had its scoring opportunities in the first half, but couldn’t capitalize as its pass recipients were just a half step out of position for the follow through shots.
Seabury sophomore Conner Snow opened the books at the 20-minute mark, capitalizing on a corner kick from Rogers.
Kapa‘a answered in the 25th minute as Tyler Cram found the net on a second effort after the Seabury goalkeeper had punted the ball out and Cram was first to the ball.
Following the 1-1 halftime tie, Deryn Tamashiro gave Kapa‘a its first lead of the match after laying out on a second-effort that rolled past the Seabury goalkeeper.
That shot came after the Seabury goalkeeper attempted to bury the ball on a Kyson Carrillo scoring attempt at the goalmouth. But the ball popped out of the goalkeeper’s arms and Tamashiro was on it for the goal that rolled in past the recovering goalie.
Following that score that came in the 49th minute, Kapa‘a held the lead until Jacob Sandoval found the net from the outside in the 64th minute for the 2-2 stalemate.
Kapa‘a had adjusted its team and was defense-postured through most of the second half, holding the taller Seabury players at bay headed by the efforts of stopper Joseph Velasco.
Rogers gave Seabury its final edge at the 81st minute on the corner kick.
The Warriors, according to coaches Kevin Cram and Todd Fuerte, were playing a full roster of players without making any cuts for the varsity and junior varsity squads.
When both teams square off at 2 p.m. today, Fuerte said there will be players who have never played soccer at the high school level joining some of the Warrior veterans.
