The 11-2 Kaua‘i High School girls volleyball team will play the 13-5 girls of Castle High School tonight for the opening round of the New City Nissan/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association’s Division II State Volleyball Championships at Farrington High School.
The winner of tonight’s match will go on to face the defending state champions, top-ranked Hawai‘i Baptist Academy from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Since the HHSAA split the teams into two divisions in 2005, the ILH has won each year.
In the 39 years of the girls tournament, there has only been two championship won by a Neighbor Island team. The girls of Hilo High School won in 1972 and 1974.
In 2006, the Waimea High School Lady Menehune finished third at states.
This year’s championships will now be played to best of five in the championship bracket. In tournament’s prior, all matches have been played to the best of three. The consolation matches will remain at best of three.
