The Kaua‘i High School volleyball team headed to the New City Nissan/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association State Championships will find out who it will play against on opening day, tonight.
The Red Raiders (11-2) will be in either the Farrington or Moanalua bracket for Division II. They leave Tuesday night for the start of the tournament on Wednesday.
Kaua‘i head coach Corey Morishita said the practices have been really good for the girls.
“We’ve gone back to the fundamentals and doing a lot of playing,” he said.
He also said that because the Raider girls are shorter than most of the other volleyball teams, he’s had more of the coaches play so the girls can get accustomed to playing against taller opponents.
The HHSAA voted to split volleyball teams to Division I and Division II starting in 2005. That year, Kapa‘a High School’s boys won the first Division II state title.
This year, the HHSAA made another change to the state volleyball championships. In the past, the championship bracket has been played to the best of three sets. Starting Wednesday, all championship bracket matches will be played to the best of five.
The consolation brackets will still be played at best of three.
