Three and a half points separated the Waimea High School cheer squad from third place in the Large Division competition.
The Menehune of Waimea were bested by the Moanalua High School Menehune for third place at the 2008 Zippy’s Cheerleading State Championships presented by the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association, Sunday on O‘ahu.
Waimea finished with 280.5 points compared with Moanalua who ended the competition with 284 points for third place. Moanalua was first finisher in the 2003 and 2004 competitions.
Top finisher for the Large Division went to the Warriors of Kamehameha-Kapalama that tallied a commanding 320 points followed by the Mililani Trojans at 292.5 points.
This was the fifth first-place finish for Kamehameha-Kapalama since the competition started in 2001.
The Warriors captured back-to-back first finishes in the Medium Division in 2001 and 2002.
Coach Dolly Wong has been at the helm of the Warriors in all but two of its first finishes.
Melissa Beimes, who coached those two championship squads, joined Wong this year in the coaches’ box.
The Radford Rams cheer squad captured its fifth straight state title in the Medium Division with a 317-point showing followed by Kamehameha-Big Island finishing with 273 points.
Kaua‘i High School remains the only Kaua‘i squad to represent the Garden Island in the Top 3, placing third in the 2004 Large Division competition.
