Cody Kimura had a hat trick and Colin Morikawa nailed two goals to lead the Afterburners to a 9-2 win over Kryptonite, Sunday at Vidinha Stadium.
The game was the season opener for the Kaua‘i Men’s Soccer Association and featured two games, the second one being taken by Hanalei on a forfeit when Cane Fire did not have enough players to field a team.
According to Sue Strickland, once the forfeit was settled, Hanalei sent players over to Cane Fire for a “friendly” match under the lights.
Cody Kimura broke open a strong defensive showing by both teams when he scored on a solo effort at the 20th minute.
With the ice broken and one Kryptonite player leaving the game on an injury, the Afterburners continued their offensive showing, with Eli Emery notching the second goal in the 28th minute after taking a nice pass from right wing Curtis Kimura.
Curtis Kimura had his chance and nailed a goal at the 30-minute mark, followed by goals from Morikawa, Drew Desmarias and Cody leading the Afterburners to a 6-0 halftime lead.
But the Kryptonite, strapped with its first-half injury and no bench to speak of, battled back and scored first in the second half when Eddie Adams took a shot against Juan Saenz who came out and went down on the play.
Duncan MacDonald, finishing with two goals for Kryptonite, swept in from the wing to finish for a 6-1 deficit.
But Cody Kimura answered with his third goal on an assist by Emery only to have Kryptonite answer on a second MacDonald goal that was headed in off a Carlos Garcia corner kick for the 7-2 deficit.
Morikawa answered with his second goal, with Cory Rita icing the victory by scoring off a DesMarias pass.
The public is invited to view the competition at no charge when the Kaua‘i Men’s Soccer Association hosts its second game of the season, Sunday at Vidinha Stadium.
Kryptonite will attempt to get into the winner’s column when it hosts Cane Fire in the 3:30 p.m. matchup and Hanalei, already 1-0 by forfeit, will tangle with the 1-0 Afterburners in the 6 p.m. nightcap.
