HANAPEPE — Tyler Yates’ field goal with 26 seconds in the game pulled the Westside Eagles Midget team to a 15-14 edge over the Lihu‘e Patriots Midget team in the finale of the Mokihana Bowl, Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium.
Kaua‘i teams finished with a 2-2 record in the four-game series as the Junior PeeWee Lihu‘e Patriots dropped a 7-0 defensive slugfest to the Panaewa Ali‘i when the Ali‘i’s Grand Shiroma broke the plane on a one-yard charge in the second quarter and graced that TD with a PAT run-in.
The Kapa‘a Eagles JPW kept its undefeated record intact as it bested the Westside Eagles JPW 19-6, and the Hanapepe Colts PeeWee was a 32-13 victory over its Westside Eagles counterpart.
“That (Midget) game was a really good game,” said Mel Rapozo, one of the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Association leaders, and host of the visiting teams from the Big Island. “It went down to the wire with that field goal giving the Eagles a one-point win.”
Yates of the Westside Eagles split the uprights on a 31-yard boot for the margin.

But the Lihu‘e Midgets answered at the 2:49 mark when Jonathan Butac found paydirt on a 7-yard scamper for the 6-6 stalemate after one quarter.
Dade Apao put the Patriots on top on a 2-yard scoring run with 55 ticks remaining in the half. Erin Doi booted the point-after for the Lihu‘e 14-6 margin at the half.
La‘akea Iseri-Carvalho threw for two touchdowns to keep the Kapa‘a Eagles JPW’s record unblemished against the Westside Eagles JPW.
Mitchell Peralto found paydirt through traffic to open the scorebooks on a 4-yard charge.
Shain Davis, who was the recipient of a 21-yard scoring pass from Iseri-Carvalho late in the third quarter, gave the Eagles its first quarter 7-6 edge after the Westside’s PAT boot failed following a 75-yard runback of a pass interception by Akoni DeMello.
Iseri-Carvalho found Brayden Apilado on a 13-yard scoring hit for the first of his two TD passes in the second quarter. Davis received the second scoring pass with just 24 seconds remaining in the half.
Jobe Delos Reyes ran for touchdowns of 28 yards and 11 yards in the first quarter en route to leading Hanapepe to a 32-13 win over the Westside Eagles PW. He finished by adding three PAT boots in the win.
Tyson Banasihan added a 16-yard scoring run and Prestyn Parongao found James McMahon on an 18-yard TD pass before the Eagles PW took flight.
With 1:10 remaining in the half, Matthew Paio scored on a 1-yard run to put Westside on the boards and a 6-yard scoring run with 1:14 remaining in the third frame was topped by a Neal Quicho run-in for the PAT and the final math.
