It comes as no surprise that times are tough; a multitude of stores, restaurants and offices on Kaua‘i are closing their doors as consumers tightly seal their wallets. Focus is diverting to less expensive, mass-produced products, and authentic island flavor is dwindling away.
What many may not realize is how important these local businesses are to the infrastructure of the island. When money is spent in local establishments, it is recycled within the community, generating economic growth and creating stable jobs for its citizens.
Additionally, owners of local companies are often more invested in the well-being of the community, as they, themselves, are intricately involved and frequently contribute to civic activities and island events.
Randall Francisco, President of Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce agrees whole-heartedly with supporting the island’s local businesses.
“This is the time to see what we can do to help the economy, as there has definitely been a noticable slow down, especially in food service and retail,” he said.
Several ongoing efforts are taking place to help recognize and support the island’s local institutions, including Kaua‘i North Shore Business Council and Kaua‘i Made.
“One way we can help the economy and our neighbors is to buy local, eat local, and therefore, think local. Wherever you are on Kaua‘i, support your local community,” said Francisco. “The same amount of effort we put forth this past week while working together through the natural storm should be the same amount of effort we put into this economic storm.”
Each week the business section hopes to feature one local business, whether they are just opening their doors, have been around for many years or simply wish to express their concerns over the survival of their enterprise.
These businesses are the mainstay of a self-reliable and sustainable community.
