KAPA‘A — Yesterday was a good day to make rainbows and the Rotary Club of Kapa‘a did just that at the Kapa‘a Elementary School.
More than 20 Rotarians from the club were joined by about a dozen students from the Interact Club of Kapa‘a High School in sprucing up the elementary school campus as a community service project.
Charlie Schnek, 13, didn’t realize it, but in the process of power-washing mold and mildew from the eaves of the school’s library, a rainbow formed and followed him as he refueled his machine and relocated it a bit further down the sidewalk. Charlie’s dad, Darren, is a member of the Rotary Club of Kapa‘a and Charlie said he came out to help his dad.
Renee Hicks, the event chair for the cleanup effort, said, “We felt that it was time for us to do something for the community, and it was time to visit the Kapa‘a Elementary’s bucket list.”
Joining the group was Floyd McNabb of Saskatoon, Canada, who said he spends part of the year here and frequently comes out to help with Rotary Club of Kapa‘a service projects.
“He’s like an honorary Rotarian because he comes out to help for five months of the year,” Hicks said.
David Shannon of Wallawalla, Wash., was another visitor who braved the morning chill to work alongside the Interact students and other Rotarians who were tackling the task of cleaning up graffiti and applying a fresh coat of paint to one of the pavilions located on the campus near the bus waiting area.
Shannon, like McNabb, spends about two to three months here “to get away from the cold.”
“This is just a nice place to come to,” Shannon said.
