Monday night Trees Lounge is hosting a CD release party for “Any Given Night,” a compilation of live recordings at Trees Lounge featuring twelve artists. The proceeds from CD sales go to the Kaua‘i High School music program.
“When we first opened we imagined having a music festival someday,” said Mark Myers, owner of Trees. “We have live music every night so we were hearing all this great music and thinking what can we do now. Giving the proceeds to charity was a natural evolution — a way to give back.”
Tony LeHoven, founder of Jazzbug saw the project as an investment in youth.
“It means a lot to all the musicians involved to be able to contribute to our musical future,” LeHoven states in a press release.
Musicians who’ve played throughout the year were invited to be recorded on site.
“By the end of recording we had 24 hours of music,” Myers said.
He describes the compilation as, “a scrap book of our entire year.”
The collection opens with a Hawaiian instrumental piece with Sean Carillo playing “Kimo’s Slack Key” and then segues to a folk song written and performed by Matt Bolton. Familiar Kaua‘i artists like Swampdaddy and Tony LeHoven of Jazzbug make appearances also.
“We titled it “On Any Given Night” because that’s Trees — we have all this talent on the island and you always know there’s gonna be variety. We’re not the same genre over and over,” Myers said.
The diverse flavor of the CD is in sync with the principles on which Myers and his wife Candice founded the lounge in November, 2007. The name “Trees” refers to the three regions represented musically and culinarily speaking at the lounge — Hawai‘i, Jamaica and New Orleans. Tree is pidgin for the number three.
From folk, to blues to reggae, the 13 tracks on the Trees Lounge first annual charity CD is diverse. Of the 12 artists featured on this disc, only one is from off island.
From 5 p.m. to midnight Monday three of the featured bands will perform for the release party: The Prehab Band, True Bruddahs and Sean Carillo. All proceeds from the $10 CD go to the Kaua‘i High School music program.
“Thanks to Trees (we’ll) be able to purchase new equipment and sheet music,” states the school’s band director, Darryl Miyasato in a press release. “With the multi-million dollar budget cuts, this charity CD couldn’t have happened at a better time.”
Myers intends to make this an annual project.
“Maybe next year we’ll pick a different school,” he said.
All but one track were recorded live at Trees Lounge by John Gilleran of Coconut Coast Recording.
