Lightning strikes forced the closure of Wailua Golf Course shortly after 1 p.m. yesterday, county officials said.
The decision to close the course for safety reasons was made by Kylan Dela Cruz of the Department of Parks and Recreation, county spokeswoman Mary Daubert said.
Dela Cruz felt that rather than place anyone in jeopardy, the closure of the golf course was the prudent choice to make because the lightning was so close to the course, Daubert said.
The trend toward a more stable weather pattern looks on track as the last of the thunderstorms departs Kaua‘i, according to the National Weather Service.
Most of the showers yesterday afternoon were over Kaua‘i, O‘ahu and Windward Big Island.
As the upper low southwest of the state moves off to the west this weekend, it will also take the unstable air mass with it, the NWS discussion states.
A high pressure cell is forecast to strengthen far northeast of the state resulting in breezy, gusty trades to about 25 mph.
The strengthening trades has the NWS posting small craft advisories for all Hawaiian waters by this morning.
A cold front approaching the island Tuesday is expected to pass north of the state,
allowing the trades to continue through Wednesday, according to NWS computer models.
The Wailua Golf Course is expected to reopen today, weather permitting, Daubert said.
