Cheyenne Tannery came to the contest with her chaps and hat on Saturday.
A student at Kalaheo School, she was taking a break from the Waimea Town Celebration rodeo and took advantage of that period to participate in the ‘ukulele contest.
That paid off big time for the Kalaheo School student who went on to win first place in the K-6 division. Following Tannery, Kaleohano Castaneda of Kekaha School was named the second place winner.
Waimea High School freshmen took all three places in the grades 7-9 category with Grant Dykema, Joseph Tangalin and John Medeiros filling in the first through third slots, respectively.
Kaua‘i High School was not to be outdone as Axel Menezes picked up the first place prize over Kawai Pascua of Waimea High School in the grades 10-12 division.
Tano Castaneda was the top winner in the adult category followed by Arod Taylor and David Aguiar.
Braxton Garma and Eric Bouldin took the group category.
Carrie Newcomb, chair of the ‘ukulele contest, said she appreciates and thanks Scotty Shapiro of Scotty’s Music in Kalaheo for all of the ‘ukuleles he contributed to the contest — “even in these hard times that we are facing.”
In addition to the ‘ukulele Shapiro contributed, Chris Faye, a longtime organizer of the Waimea Town Celebration, said Shapiro got on stage and dedicated an original composition to the people of Kaua‘i before presenting everyone in the contest with an ‘ukulele.
