6th Annual Family
Summit
Kapa‘a High School
From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow, and with the sole focus on strengthening families through empowerment, this free event takes place with virtually no funding from the government or any single organization. A team of volunteers from the East Kaua‘i Drug Prevention Education Team works together to pull in resources from the North Shore to Wailua to create an event that provides free food, information and entertainment for nearly 1,200 people. The courtyard between Kapa‘a High School and Kapa‘a Elementary School is transformed with 20 tents housing over 50 family service information tables, a music and performance stage, a food service area and a dozen activities for the whole family. To donate time call Bridget, 821-6972 ext. 116 or Dori, 821-2025.
Kudos to Marisa Gaalema
Marisa (Daligcon) Gaalema received her National Board Teacher Certification as recently announced by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards.
She is the granddaughter of Esmenia Balderas of Hanapepe Heights and daughter of Jim and Bobbie Daligcon, both graduates of Waimea High School.
To obtain her certification, Gaalema was required to catalog her teaching experiences, create portfolios of her work and take tests. She is one of 919 Washington state teachers who became National Board certified in 2008 and will receive a $5,000 bonus. She is presently a literacy coach for teachers at the Cedarhurst Elementary School in Burien, Wash.
Washington Governor Christine Gregoire extended her congratulations. “Your commitment to excellence and ability to complete this rigorous process has led to this recognition by your peers.”
