Kaua‘i musicians and residents, Doug and Sandy McMaster, were recently honored by the Hawai‘i Music Awards. Their CD “Hanalei Tradition” won in the Hawaiian slack key category of the annual “People’s Choice Awards.” The award program is sponsored by the Hawai‘i Music Foundation.
The McMasters present weekly concerts in Hanalei as part of their work to perpetuate traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar style created by the Hawaiians in the late 1700’s.
They started their concert series in 1999. The weekly concerts are held at 4 p.m. Fridays and 3 p.m. Saturdays at the Hanalei Family Community Center.
Tickets are $20. Reservations can be made by calling 826-1469 and leaving a name, concert date and number of tickets needed. The tickets are held for pick up at the door.
The Hawai‘i Music Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the diversity of music found in the State of Hawai‘i, as well as honoring and acknowledging the talents and achievements of the music community. Founded in 1996, the foundation also supports music education in schools by providing funding for scholarships and grants.
