HANAMA‘ULU — The Kaua’i Police Department and the county’s Solid Waste Division recently collaborated on a sweep of abandoned and derelict vehicles in Hanama‘ulu, a county news release said Tuesday.
The project began with officers posting notices about the planned removal on the windshields of 31 abandoned and derelict vehicles that were parked along Laukona Street.
After a 24-hour grace period, 10 vehicles were removed by their owners and 21 were towed by companies contracted by the county.
Officers issued a total of 36 citations for various violations including abandoned and derelict vehicles and expired safety checks and registration.
“Part of the goals of the Patrol Services Bureau-Lihu‘e district is to help keep our neighborhoods safe and respond to the concerns of area residents,” Lihu‘e District Commander Lt. Kaleo Perez said in the release. “The Hanama‘ulu project was undertaken as a cooperative effort between KPD and the Solid Waste Division in response to the community’s concern about the large number of abandoned and derelict vehicles in the area.”
Kaua‘i County Code says an abandoned vehicle is defined as any vehicle left unattended for more than 24 hours on a public highway, public property or private lands.
A vehicle is deemed to be derelict if major parts have been removed or material damage to the vehicle has rendered the vehicle inoperable.
Owners of “junk” vehicles may dispose their vehicles free of charge by completing a junking form that is available at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
The owner must surrender his license plates, certificate of title and certificate of registration along with the junking form to the DMV office.
If a junking form cannot be obtained, a waiver, release, and indemnity agreement can be obtained from the DMV office and turned in to Abe’s Auto Recyclers, Inc.
After the completed documents are submitted, the vehicle must be towed to Puhi Metals Recycling Center.
