WAILUA — Kaua‘i Police Chief Darryl Perry spent Friday afternoon next to the Wailua Golf Course waving at motorists along Kuhio Highway to remind them to stay within the posted speed limit, a county news release states.
“My being out there was just a small part the Kaua‘i Police Department’s campaign to urge motorists to slow down and save lives along the Lihu’e to Wailua corridor of Kuhio Highway,” said Perry. “Historically, that stretch of roadway has been the scene of more serious crashes than any other location on the island.”
The police department partnered with the state Department of Transportation and launched the anti-speeding campaign last month with a goal of zero fatalities in the area in 2009.
Part of the campaign included the installation of electronic road signs that show the speed of passing motorists and messages that say “Slow Down” or “Speed limit 50 mph.”
Additionally, KPD has stepped up enforcement efforts in the area.
Since the anti-speeding campaign started last month, 26 speeding citations were issued along the Lihu‘e to Wailua corridor of Kuhio Highway, compared to seven in the same period last year.
