LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Community College Office of Continuing Education and Training and Caring for Our Kupuna are offering family caregiver trainings starting next month, a news release states.
There are two different workshops specifically targeted to family members who are caring for their parents or spouses or other elderly family members.
Caregiving can be one of the biggest challenges a person can face. At one time or another, most families find themselves making decisions about providing care for a loved one at home. Home healthcare is one of the fastest-growing segments of the healthcare industry in the United States.
This care is expected to increase dramatically in the next few decades. In order to respond to this challenge training is being offered.
The first workshop — led by Jill Hedges Ramsey, Training and Education coordinator with the Alzheimer’s Association — is a series of six, 2-hour classes which will provide participants with the knowledge of what is involved in caring for a family elder and how to make informed decisions when providing care to a loved one.
The stand-alone classes will cover topics like normal aging and common chronic health conditions, community services and residential living options, legal and financial considerations, caring for someone with a terminal diagnosis, memory exercises to keep the aging mind sharp, tips on caring for an elder with Alzheimer’s and how to care for you the caregiver.
It is free for family member to family member caregivers; $25 for other caregivers.
This workshop is funded with Federal Title III National Caregiver Support Funds, the State Executive Office on Aging and Kauai Agency on Elderly Affairs. These classes begin April 3, from 1 to 3 p.m., at the OCET Multipurpose Room at Kaua‘i Community College.
The second workshop led by Victoria Mathis APRN-BC, Nursing Instructor at Kauai Community College is a series of three classes totaling 4.5 hours designed to give caregivers the skills and techniques for ensuring safety, preserving dignity, and preventing injury to both the elder and caregiver.
Participants will learn how to assist with feeding, toileting, bathing and providing oral care, incontinence care and skin care. Body positioning and mechanics and transfer techniques will also be covered. This course costs $30. Class begins May 8 at 3:15 p.m. in the KCC Nursing Building Lab.
