On March 7 Waimea Canyon Middle School’s Hawai‘i State Science Olympiad team competed in the state finals of this competition. For those unfamiliar with the Hawai‘i State Science Olympiad, it is a team-oriented competition in which students participate in events encompassing many different areas of science and engineering. The events included amphibians and reptiles; fossils; reach for the stars (astronomy); dynamic planet (geology); write it to do it (procedure writing); experimental design (scientific method); trajectory (catapult for accuracy); elevated bridge (bridge design); environmental chemistry (soil science) and ecology.
This was the first year WCMS participated in this event. The team consisted of six seventh and eighth graders: Alexys Bermudez, Lani Green, Alex Hashimoto, Chris Milan, Kiana Pigao and Melanie Sacro. Due to the small size of the team each student participated in three to four events each, which meant a lot of studying and preparation.
By the end of all the event’s winners were called and WMCS was happy and proud to learn they had placed third in one event, second in two events, and first in two events.
WCMS took second place over all. Science is alive at Waimea Canyon Middle School and these students prove it.
