KAPA‘A — Kapa‘a’s Lyndsey Tom stands alone as the only undefeated No. 1 girls singles player left in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation after beating her toughest competition, Kaua‘i’s Sarah Kukino, on Saturday 6-3, 7-6 (1). Tom, who has been ranked at the top since her freshman year, was hopping with due to an injury was dragged to a tie-break by Kukino but was still able to come up with the singles win and lead the team to beating Kaua‘i 3-2.
Kaua‘i’s Shay Orial beat Kapa‘a’s Makena McCluskey 6-3, 6-1, leaving the match to be determined by the doubles. Kapa‘a won two of the three to get the win. Kapa‘a’s Kirsten McCracken and Kaylie Nakamura beat Christine Castillo and Waters Riley, 6-2, 6-2, and Angela Mones and Sierra Mayer beat Raisa Carlos and Katie Johnson, 6-0, 6-2.
Kaua‘i’s No. 1 doubles team won its match with Jasmine Ikeda and Jennifer Grady beating Cherine Ito and Alexsis Valdez in three sets, 7-5, 1-6 and 6-3.
Kapa‘a’s boys, playing without their No. 1 player Chas Okamoto, got swept by Kaua‘i. Kaua‘i’s Ryan Bieker beat Dustin Valdez, who stepped into the top spot in place of Okamoto who is on O‘ahu. But Valdez wasn’t going down without a fight. Valdez forced a tie-break in the first set which ended in Bieker’s favor at 7-6 (4). He then won the second set 6-1.
Okamoto is in his second year in the No. 1 spot for the Warriors and remains undefeated even though he missed Saturday’s matches.
Kaua‘i won the second singles match by default and won all of it’s doubles matches. Chris Flynn and Lanning Henriques beat Jacques Amo/Tyler Cram 6-4, 6-7 (3) and 7-5. Peter Nguyen and Lance Matsumoto beat Patrick Tran and Nick Awong, 6-3, 6-4 and Michael Fujikawa and Nick Bieker beat Thomas Gausepohl and Travis Manning 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.

PUHI — Waimea High School’s boys and girls tennis teams won 4-1 against Island School at the Kaua‘i Community College tennis courts.
Waimea’s boys swept the singles with wins from Harold Shimono Jr. and Darrel Nonaka. Island School’s sole win came in the No. 2 doubles match when Larry Miller and Dylan Morrison-Fogel beat Kevin Toma and Bryce Rivera 2-6, 7-5 and 6-2.
In the girls division, Island School’s No. 1, Juli Blachowiak defeated Dessa Rentrop, 6-0, 6-0 and Waimea’s Rachel Wright beat Jessica Duarte, 1-6, 6-1 and 6-2.
