LIHU‘E — The baton exchange between Reanna Javinar and Jessica Iwata for the last leg of the Girls 4×100 Meter Relay was a little rocky, but the two were able to stay within range and pull it off to keep a legal time and come up with their third consecutive win of the season with a time of 52.44.
“I had to full-on stop,” said Iwata. “(Reanna) was telling me, ‘Jess! Stop!”
The win by the No. 1 ranked relay team along with a Girls 100 Meter Dash win by Kathleen Cadiente (13.22), two field event wins by Javinar and a Girls High Jump win by Kainoa Naihe (4 feet 3 inches) and the Kaua‘i High School girls track team won the Mayor’s Invitational meet at Vidinha Stadium. The Kaua‘i boys track team (167) edged out Kapa‘a (152) for the win.
The Red Raider girls also went 1-2 in the Girls Shot Put with a gold-medal finish for Uila Ahosivi (34 feet, 3 inches) and a silver for Kayla Werner (33 feet, 9 inches).
Waimea had its share of wins coming from Caralyn Broyles, Charleen Miguel and Jayme Jacinto.
Broyles, the Naval Academy-bound senior, won a convincing 2:34.73 in the Girls 800 Meter Run and a 5:34.37 in the Girls 1,500 Meter Run. She later won the Girls 3,000 (12:14.15) and ran in the first-place winning Girls 4×400 Meter Relay.
Miguel, who anchored the 4×400 relay, finished with a late-surge in the Girls 400 Meter Dash (1:09.63) to just beat out Kapa‘a’s Sarah Faraola (1:09.90). Miguel also beat out her teammate Jacinto in the Girls 200 Meter Dash, winning with a time of 27.79 to Jacinto’s 28.47. Jacinto easily clocked in an automatic state-qualifying time in the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles (16.37) and also won the Girls 300 Meter Hurdles.
Kaua‘i’s girls won the meet with score of 205. Waimea finished second with a score of 132. Kapa‘a scored 107 .
On the boys side, Island School may not have come close to winning the Mayor’s Meet, but they produced a runner who just may win two events at the state championship. Island School’s Pierce Murphy, who went into yesterday’s meet ranked No. 2 in both the 1,500 and the 3,000, ran his personal best in both races to post times which should give him the No. 1 spot now, taking it away from Pac-Five’s Matt Nakamoto. Murphy’s Boys 1,500 Meter Run time of 4:23.77 beats Nakamoto’s 4:24.00 from last week. His 3,000 time of 9:35.18 just beats Nakamoto’s 9:35.5.
Nakamoto’s most recent times for Friday’s meet on O‘ahu were not posted by press time.
Kaua‘i won the Boys 110 Meter Hurdles (Darren Acoba, 16.69), the Boys 400 Meter Dash (Jacob Saniatan, 57.62) and the Boys Triple Jump (Allen Domingo, 41 feet, 3 1/4 inches).
Kapa‘a got first-place finishes from Tyler Cram (High Jump, 6 feet — an automatic state qualifying jump and Long Jump, 19 feet, 8 1/2 inches), Villiami Masaniai (Shot Put, 40 feet, and Discus, 119 feet, 8 inches).
Waimea got wins from Nelson Acosta, who won the Boys 300 Meter Hurdles with a time of 48.53 and the Boys 4×100 Meter Relay with Darrel Nonaka, Cody Owen, Christian Tangalin and Torrey Santiago.
