Five athletes and a relay team made automatic state qualifying times on Friday in the second Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation qualifying track meet at Vidinha Stadium.
Caralyn Broyles, the senior distance runner out of Waimea High School, improved on her 1,500 Meter Run time from last week by 20 seconds. Broyles ran a solid 5:19.35 for an automatic state championship qualifying time — the standard is 5:20.24. Broyles later won the 300 Meter Hurdles event with a time of 52.49.
Island School’s Pierce Murphy improved his 1,500 Meter Run time by three seconds (4:25.10) to cruise into his auto qualifying time. Murphy qualified for the 3,000 Meter Run last week, and opted not to run it on Friday. Instead, Murphy ran, and won, the 800 Meter run.
Kaua‘i’s Kathleen Cadiente is already one of the top 100 Meter Dash sprinters in the state — having automatically qualifying in double events last week — made a repeat performance in first place for the dash with a time of 13:22. Also making it through to states without a problem was Waimea’s Jayme Jacinto in the 100 Meter Hurdles (17.11). Kaua‘i’s Canaan Bernard (11.32) snuck his way into states by .02 in the 100 Meter Dash.
The defending girls state championship 4×100 Meter Relay team from Kaua‘i turned in another fast performance on Friday with a time of 52.49.
Kaua‘i’s Darren Acoba in the 110 Meter Hurdles (16.29) just missed the auto time by .05.
One of the day’s closest finishes came from the girls in the 400 Meter Dash. Waimea’s Charleen Miguel beat Kaua‘i’s Melissa Carlos by .02. Miguel finished with a time of 1:10.66 over Carlos’ 1:10.68. Miguel also won the 200 Meter Dash.
Kapa‘a’s boys track team had strong showings in the 400 Meter Dash and the 300 Meter Hurdles. Kapa‘a’s Royal Jerves (58.60) and Zachary Rodriguez (59.48) finished first and second, respectively, in the 400 Meters and the Joseph Velasco 300 Meter Hurdles over a field consisting solely of his teammates with a time of 44.76.
The field events weren’t reported by press time but will be reported on a later date.
