LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School golfers Wiley Yoshioka shot a three-over par 75 and Levi Miyashiro followed two strokes back Saturday.
But their scores didn’t count toward the team scoring as Kaua‘i coach Ipo Yoshioka mixed the team roster with one regular match remaining in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf season.
Mitch Keep made his first season appearance on the Red Raider team, finishing with an 84 to help lead the Kaua‘i boys team to its fifth straight win at 327. Kapa‘a boys, led by Sean Mamaclay’s 82, finished at 359 followed by Waimea boys, getting an 83 from Dylan Santos-Balisacan, ending the day three strokes back of Kapa‘a at 362.
Fred Levinthol, the Kapa‘a golf coach, said the Waimea girls team made KIF history as it locked up the title unchallenged with a 349 led by the consistent play of Melissa Kagawa who finished with a 95.
Levinthol said with all the attention on the weather last week at the Kiahuna Golf Course, the Menehune women clinched the title there with a 367, again paced by Kagawa’s 106.
Following Kagawa at the Puakea Golf Course, Saturday, Hamiha Arquette carded her best score of the season at 124 for her second appearance as a Menehune team member, and Hanna Pleas finished with a 130 for her third appearance as a Menehune team scoring member.
Kelli Oride of Kaua‘i High School was joined by fellow golfer Rae-Lyn Morikawa in posting the two best scores for the girls at 78 and 81, respectively.
Gabby Saiki of Kapa‘a followed with an 88 with freshman golfer Shiyu “Star” Song finishing with a 140. There were no other Kapa‘a girls golfing which prevented the Warriors from a team score.
Jordan Oda posted a 79 to lead the Kaua‘i boys to its KIF team title. He was followed by Reyn Morioka’s 81, Kyle Furusho’s 83 and Keep’s 84.
Mamaclay topped the Kapa‘a boys’ scoring with his 82 followed by Weston Moniz finishing with an 85 and having time to make the start of the KIF boys volleyball game at Kaua‘i High School where he plays for the Warriors’ JV squad.
Justin Uegawa finished with a 93 and Aaron Belmonte, making only his third appearance this year, rounded out the team scoring at 99.
Santos-Balisacan finished with an 83, his second-best score of the season, to lead Waimea’s boys in team scoring. Jake Kuzen finished with an 89, Aaron Medeiros carded a 92 and Shawn Tavares finished with a 98 to round out the Menehune effort.
This weekend’s round moves back to the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course followed by two weeks of qualifying play at the Wailua Golf Course for the state meet.
