Celebrate Reading is a conversation-based program where all community members were invited to read books by visiting artists and then attend reading performances and two break-out sessions where they can talk with the authors. This free event opens with the reading by visiting authors Witi Ihimaera (“The Whale Rider”); Kiana Davenport (Shark dialogues); Christopher Moore (“Lamb”); Kaui Hart Hemmings (“House of Thieves”); Markus Zusak (“The Book Thief”); Patricia Wood (“Lottery”) and slam poet Kealoha. Break-out sessions will follow the reading.

A celebration of April as National Poetry Month and thematically inspired by Arbor Day, Kaua‘i poets will perform original works. Friday’s poets are: Brian Cronwall, Shawna Caro, Faith Harding, Dawn Kawahara, Rich King, Tom Patch, and Kimie Sadoyama, with Alla Royss on the piano. Special guests will be members from Ka ‘Imi Na‘auao o Hawai‘i Nei Institute performing traditional hula chants under the direction of Kumu Hula Keahi Manea. Cronwall and Royss will co-lead Saturday’s creative playshop. Steve Backinoff will coordinate the ‘PoeTree’ assisted by Dawn Kawahara and Michaella Mintcheff. Donations accepted. Creative playshops are at 4 p.m. Saturday and encourage group participation; they will be followed by an open reading at 6:30 p.m. at the KAPA warehouse. Kaua‘i Backstory will host a reading with visiting Honolulu writers Kealoha and Patricia Wood. This is the first of the “Kaua‘i Backstory Reading Series,” periodic events inviting writers to read their work aloud to an audience.
Keynote writers Kealoha, world-renowned slam poet and Patricia Wood, author of the critically acclaimed “Lottery” will share their art and answer questions. Afterwards Kaua‘i writers are invited to read for a maximum of five minutes on a first-come basis. Fiction, nonfiction and poetry welcome. To learn more visit, kauaibackstory.com
