Sounding more like a football score than a baseball final, Waimea High pounded three Kapa‘a High pitchers for 21 runs on 15 hits, downing the Warriors 21-3 at Hanapepe Stadium.
The game’s outcome was decided before Kapa‘a even came to the plate two times, as Waimea sent 18 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, scoring 13 runs on nine hits, helped by four Kapa‘a errors.
Shylen Keuma got the win for Waimea, pitching 1 2/3 innings, giving up one hit and striking out two, in the mercy-rule-shortened, five-inning game. Brehdan Kamibayashi took the loss for Kapa‘a, taking the mound twice during the contest, giving up 11 runs (nine earned) on nine hits, walking five, striking out two and hitting two Menehune batters.
Robert Perreira led the Waimea onslaught, going 4-4 with a triple, walk, 2 RBI and three runs scored. Gavin Jardin was 2-2 with 2 RBI, two walks, and scored three runs. Kalani Fernandez was 1-1 and scored three runs, and Kailen Malama was 1-2 with a double and 2 RBI, and he scored two runs.
Isaa Horner was 1-2 with a double, walk, RBI and three runs scored, and Michael Acoba was 2-5 with 2 RBI and two runs scored.
Bronson Aiwohi and Tanner Shigeta each had two hits for Kapa‘a, with Aiwohi getting an RBI and Shigeta hitting a double and scoring a run. Anson Villatora had a double and RBI, and Kekoa Alfiler had Kapa‘a’s other hit. Aaron Belmonte scored Kapa‘a’s other run in the top of the fifth inning of Waimea’s final home game of the season.
Waimea was up 9-0 in the first inning before even tallying their second out in the frame, and the score was 18-2 after two innings, with Dillon Ishihara knocking in one with a single, and Micah Rita tallying two RBI on his single in the bottom of the second inning.
It was 19-2 after three innings, and Waimea’s final runs came on a 2-RBI single by Kahai Hosaka.
Waimea moved to 3-0-1 in the second round and 8-1-1 overall, and Kapa‘a fell to 0-5 in the second round and 1-10 overall.
The game sets the stage for the first-place showdown for second-round supremacy, a doubleheader Saturday at Vidinha Stadium with Kaua‘i High hosting Waimea, with the first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m., and the second game around noon.
