Kapa‘a Middle School Choir and Ukulele Band returned from the Heritage Music Festival in San Diego, California last week with a gold medal.
Participants were under the direction of Mary Lardizabal and Ukulele Band, co-directed by Loke Sasil and Anson Lardizabal.
“They truly represented their school and island with great pride and aloha,” said the choir’s music teacher, Mary Lardizabal in a press release.
The choir’s performance consisted of ‘show choir’ choreography and sign language, followed by selections of song as they shared the gift of hula.
“Our program is encompassed by incredible students and parents who support these wonderful opportunities. We had to do a number of fundraisers this year to defray the cost of the trip, but many of our community members really believe in our students and supported every effort that was made,” she said.
This is Lardizabal’s eighth year participating in the Heritage Music Festival.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the choir members to experience the Mainland, to hear other choirs perform, to be adjudicated by outstanding professors of music, and to develop greater confidence through performance and competition,” Lardizabal said.
Upcoming events for the Kapa‘a Middle School Choir and Ukulele Band include performances at the Family Fair tomorrow at Kukui Grove Center; the Roy Sakuma Ukulele Festival April 11 at Kukui Grove Center; the Spring Choral Concert May 6 and Ukulele Ohana Night May 20.
