After Waimea and Kapa‘a had their spring showcases on Friday night, Kaua‘i High School had Saturday night all to itself. It was a night for Red Raider fans to come out and support their boys as spring practice and summer camp looms.
The junior varsity team got the night started with its intrasquad showdown, playing a four-quarter contest with each quarter consisting of 12 plays.
JV quarterback John Das stood out as an up-and-coming impact player, maybe with his legs even more than his arm. He showed the ability to tuck the ball and run with it, elude tacklers and get to the edge.
Linebacker Keoki Pantorilla may have had the highlight of the game when he made an interception in the middle of the field, ran a few steps, then bobbled the ball up in the air, composed himself and caught it again before picking up more yardage.
After singing the school alma mater, the varsity took the field. Each quarter in this game had 25 plays, so the fans would get to see 100 plays from the big boys on the night.
The planes flying overhead after taking off from nearby Lihue airport were a fitting sight, as the Red Raiders offense showed how they intend to use an aerial assault with their talented offense.
Senior quarterback Trey Shimabukuro, playing on this night for the White team, displayed his strong arm and showcased his accuracy. Though the team showed some rust with a few early drops, they moved down the field and Shimabukuro eventually found an open Taran Tani in the end zone for a score.
Shimabukuro stood strong in the pocket and controlled the action with his patience and poise.
When the Red team took possession, it was senior quarterback Kalena (Boom) Rodero Workman who led the squad against their White counterparts.
All in all, the night would have been a success with the food collection alone, which accumulated a large amount of canned goods to donate to the Kaua‘i Food Bank. Additionally, the Red Raiders players and coaches gave fans a glimpse of what to expect and what they need to work on heading into the 2009 season.
