At least 60 people are expected to compete in the revived Kaua‘i Loves You! Triathlon in and around Kalapaki and Nawiliwili Saturday, including teams of three members that will each do the swim, run and bike portions of the event.
That’s according to Stephanie Rogers, triathlon race director and aquatics director of the YMCA of Kaua‘i.
Packet pickup is today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the YMCA of Kaua‘i facility along Kaumuali‘i Highway in Puhi. There will be no packet pickup Saturday morning.
Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics and the YMCA of Kaua‘i are hosting the triathlon, which starts at 7 a.m. with the swimming phase in Kalapaki Bay (750 meters or a half-mile, depending on whether the competitors or teams are participating in the sprint or supersprint distances).
That will be followed by the bike, which will take competitors onto Nawiliwili Road and twice up to and down from the Menehune (Alekoko) Fishpond (20 kilometers or 12 miles, please see the map), followed by the run portion which will take place for the most part on the grounds of Kaua‘i Lagoons (5K or three miles).
There will be no road closures for the event, though the county parking lot near JJ’s Broiler will be closed from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., as it will be used for the race transition area (where athletes move from the swim to the bike to the run phases).
Cyclists are expected on public roads between 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., and motorists are asked to exercise caution during these times on the bike route, Rogers said. Volunteers will direct traffic as needed.
Race registration can only be accomplished today in person at the YMCA headquarters in Puhi. No registrations will be accepted the morning of the event.
