The Ohana senior softball team beat East Kaua‘i on May 9 by a score of 18-15. It was East Kaua‘i’s first loss of the season.
The first inning was action-packed, as East Kaua‘i started the game off with five runs in the top half, followed by Ohana responding with three in the bottom of the frame.
Ohana scored four more in the bottom of the second to grab a 7-5 lead.
The teams traded runs in the third before East Kaua‘i grabbed a 9-8 lead in the top of the fourth. It was a lead that would not stand for long as Ohana plated three runs in the bottom half to regiain a two-run advantage.
East Kaua‘i continued the back-and-forth nature of the contest as Tom Ganog, Skip Schaefer, Richard Koerte and Mike Curtis contributed to a two-run inning, knotting the score at 11-11.
That was as close as it would be for the remainder of the game, as Ohana brought home four big runs in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to the bats of Eddie Dela Cruz, Ronnie Dotario, Guy Ruiz, Cliff Shigematsu and Gordon Arakaki.
Down 15-11, East Kaua‘i fought to stay within striking distance, scoring two in the sixth, including a home run from Larry Ephan that left the park.
When it was all said and done, Ohaha had its three-run victory and East Kaua‘i had its first defeat.
Ohana was led by Dela Cruz’s 5-for-5 day and Paul Silva Jr.’s 3-for-4, six RBI performance. Dotario, Ruiz and Shigematsu all had three hits apiece.
East Kaua‘i’s offense was led by Ephan’s four RBIs. Ganog, Schaefer, Joshua Huddy and Curtis each had three hits, while Frank Bukoski and Koerte had two hits.
