Make it back-to-back titles for Kristina Merkle as the Moanalua golfer captured the 2009 HHSAA David Ishii Girls Golf Championship on Wednesday.
Merkle, who won last year’s title by one stroke, followed up her 73 on Tuesday with a tournament-best round of 72, finishing with a 145 for the event. That total gave her
a five-stroke ege over
second-place finisher,
Kelli Oride of Kaua‘i High School.
Oride, who shot a 74 Tuesday, came back with a 76 on Wednesday to put her total at 150, good for sole possession of second place.
Rounding out the top five in the individual competition were Cassy Isagaw of Baldwin (151), Alina Ching of Punahou (152) and Marissa Chow of Iolani (155).
Last year’s second place finishers, Britney Yada of Waiakea and Anna Jang of Punahou, finished with totals of 164 and 165, respectively.
The team event was tight right to the finish, with Punahou coming away with the championship. Its four players shot a combined 229 on Tuesday and 240 on Wednesday to come away with a 469 total.
That was good enough
to hold off Baldwin, which finished five strokes
back with a 474. Waiakea totaled a 475. Merkle’s Moanalua finished tied for fourth place with Mid-Pacific at 513.
