Over twenty students from Kilauea Elementary School were recognized for their poems in the 10th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Poetry competition May 19. Fifth grader Kahiwahiwa Davis received the grand prize. Some 370 Kaua‘i students participated in the countywide competition organized by the International Peace Poem Project, a non-governmental organization of volunteers, including teachers and artists. The competition was to honor Dr. King, the civil rights leader who promoted nonviolent means to achieve social change. Davis’s poem entitled “Peace Can Come in Small Packages” was awarded an oil painting donated by Sargent’s Art Gallery of Lahaina. Councilwoman Lani Kawahara presented the grand prize during a ceremony at the school.

Kaua‘i High School junior Matthew Heller will participate in the U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar program along with a select group of men and women from around the nation. The program is a fast-paced, six-day experience for high achievers who have completed their junior year in high school and are considering applying for admission to the Academy.
Kaua‘i High School student Stacie Shinagawa of Lawai is the recipient of the Japan-America Friendship Scholar program. Shinagawa will participate in an exchange program with “Youth for Understanding.” She will travel abroad to live with a host family and participate in a cultural immersion experience in Japan.
Kaua‘i High School 2005 graduate, Army Pvt. Brian J. Wright, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During nine weeks of training, he studied the Army mission, history, traditions, bayonet training, drill and ceremony, and field tactics. Wright is the son of Brenda and Herbert Blaise of Waimea.

The class of l963 is planning a birthday celebration reunion for January or February of 2010. Classmates will be turning 65 and a “Medicare Birthday” reunion in Las Vegas was suggested.
